Gut Health and Its Impact on Mental Health

 Over the years, various research is done to know the factors effecting mental health. And through this research people have come to know the connection between gut and mental health. And it has gained attention over the years.

Although, the primary function of gut is to help in digestion but research has shown that its plays a big role in mental health. The reason is that our brain and gut are connected via gut-brain axis, due to which any problem in gut effects the mind.

The gut-brain axis is basically direct as well as indirect communication between gut and our central nervous system. It is done via hormones, vague nerves and signals.

So bad gut basically means bad mental health. It is because the gut produces a large amount of serotonin. It is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for regulating our mood, appetite, and sleep. An interesting fact is that about 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut. So, when our stomach is disturbed, less serotonin is produced which results in depression, anxiety and mood swings.

Mental illnesses like depression and anxiety also cause inflammation in the gut. Any imbalance in gut bacteria can make the lining of the gut leaky which is usually called as "leaky gut." This leaky gut is not good for overall well being of body because toxins and pathogens can get into blood which causes inflammation.

As we now know that gut and mental health are closely link to each other, it should be of no surprise that what we eat directly impacts on our mental heath. Processed food is disastrous for gut and mind, while the intake of balanced food promotes good health.

It is advised to take prebiotics by increasing the intake of high fibre foods vegetables, fruits and whole grain. It is a good bacteria which our gut needs to improve its health. So, prebiotics rich foods help maintain a healthy gut microbiome, which results in better mental health.

Omega-3s, are also very good for gut health. Fatty fish like salmon and flaxseeds are the best sources of omega3. Its anti-inflammatory characteristics helps to reduce inflammation in gut and brain, which leads to better mental health.
